Cane Toads in the news

Written by

Cane Toads are in the news, and we are on the lookout for toady locations where we could organise a toad blitz!

If you know of a place where heaps of toads can be easily found, we can have a toad blitz there, collecting them humanely and reducing pressure on frogs and reptiles.  We can then deliver adult toads to Professor Rob Capon of UQ, who devised the cane toad tadpole trap and needs venom from the adult toads.  If you have a pond and would like a trap, let us know!

Fun facts about toads:

  • A female can lay 35,000 eggs per clutch, with up to 2 clutches a year!
  • They are toxic at all stages of their life cycle.
  • Some dogs are addicted to cane toad poison and get high by licking the toads.  Not great for the dogs though.
  • Some birds such as magpies and crows have learnt to flip over the cane toads to eat them without being poisoned.

Some of our members have been helping reduce cane toad numbers for a while now! This has been very effective in assisting breeding of native frogs in rainy periods.
