April Fish ID Talk

Written by

Did you miss Leo Lee's great talk at our April meeting? He talked about fish that he had recently observed in Norman Creek, fish that could be here or could have been here, and how to improve habitat for fish in our waterways.

Fish observed

  • Lerna St bridge, Woolloongabba: fork-tailed catfish
  • Bowie's Flat, Coorparoo: few fish observed
  • Barr St Park, Tarragindi: sea mullet
  • Arnwood Place, Annerley: swordtails, tilapia, sea mullet
  • Glindemann Park, Holland Park: Mosquito fish (Gambusia), swordtails

Fish that should be in our waterways:

  • crimson spot rainbow fish
  • blue eyes
  • purple spotted gudgeon
  • firetail gudgeon
  • western carp gudgeon
  • empire gudgeon
  • olive glass perchlet
  • mouth almighty
  • smelt
  • hardihead
  • spangled perch
  • eel-tailed catfish
  • flathead gudgeon
  • striped gudgeon
  • hardy heads
  • sea mullet
  • bullrout
  • long-finned eel
  • short-finned eel

Leo's recommendations for improving fish habitat

1. Creeks are better than ponds or lakes for maintaining a healthy population of native fish species. Native fish species are adapted to the variable flow that is a feature of Australian creeks.

2. A variety of native aquatic plants can help to provide food, shelter and oxygen.

3. Underwater structures like rocks and logs provide an important substrate for laying eggs.

4. Due to genetic variability, it is not recommended to translocate fish between catchments.
