A win-win solution

Written by

Bridgewater Creek at Wembley Park has largely escaped encroachment by a new bikeway, but already has a bike/pedestrian path along it, on the southern bank.

This concrete path runs very close to the waterway, to within 1 metre in places, due to the proximity of grass netball courts.

As a result, proper riparian management is impossible due to fast-flowing runoff from the path moving over the creek banks and spreading weeds.  This involves ongoing cost in weed control and bank stabilisation.

N4C has proposed an alternative route for the path and a relocation of netball courts, which would improve the health of Bridgewater Creek and ultimately benefit the netball association as well.  We have met with the Metropolitan Districts Netball Association and they would be supportive of the initiative.  Moving the courts could be an impetus to attract funding for additional hard courts.  We will continue to encourage the Brisbane City Council to move in this direction.
